Disciplines and match formats

Bookmakers accept bets on Counter-Strike 2, Dota 2, League of Legends, Valorant, Mobile Legends, Starcraft II, and other disciplines. The widest lines cover international tournaments and regional leagues featuring top teams. Matches are played in Best of 1 (BO1), Best of 3 (BO3), or Best of 5 (BO5) formats — meaning the winner is the team that wins one, two, or three maps first, respectively.

Format affects betting approach. In BO1, a single bad round or random moment can decide the outcome, making the result less predictable. In BO3 and BO5, a strong team has time to adapt, change tactics, and demonstrate the advantage of roster depth. Longer series reduce the impact of chance, but demand stamina from players — fatigue by the third or fifth map becomes a factor as well.

Main betting markets

The simplest market is match winner. You pick the team that will win the entire series. Odds depend on the strength of opponents, current form, head-to-head history, and tournament motivation. If the favorite is obvious, their odds will be low; the underdog's will be high.

Map handicap works in longer series. For example, a –1.5 map handicap on team A means that for the bet to win, they need to win by at least two maps — 2:0 in BO3 or 3:0, 3:1 in BO5. A +1.5 handicap on team B wins if they win or lose by no more than one map.

Map total is a bet on how many maps will be played in the series. Over 2.5 in BO3 means the match will go to a third map. Under 2.5 means the series ends 2:0. In BO5, totals of 3.5 and 4.5 are popular.

In live betting, you can wager on the winner of the current map, round handicaps and totals on a map, which team will win the next round, and exact round scores. Settlement rules for these markets vary by bookmaker — read the rules section on the operator's site before placing a bet.

What to consider before betting

Team roster is a key factor. Replacing one player, especially an AWPer in Counter-Strike 2 or a carry in Dota 2, changes roster strength. Check who will play: information is published in tournament announcements, team social media, and specialized portals like HLTV or Liquipedia.

Patches and game updates affect balance. A new patch in Dota 2 or League of Legends can strengthen some heroes and weaken others. A team that adapts faster to the meta gains an advantage in the first weeks after an update. In Counter-Strike 2, changes to maps or weapons also shift tactics.

Tournament format matters. Matches at LAN tournaments — with players in the same venue — are usually more stable than online games, where technical issues, lag, or even DDoS attacks are possible. LAN brings higher motivation, more pressure, and fewer random factors. Low-tier online matches can be unpredictable.

Team motivation depends on the tournament stage. In the group stage, a team that has already advanced to playoffs may conserve energy or field a substitute roster. In decisive elimination matches, motivation is at its peak, but nerves run higher too.

Live betting and broadcast delay

Live betting on esports is popular but requires attention to broadcast delay. There may be a gap of several seconds between the real moment in the game and what you see on screen — especially on free streaming platforms. Bookmakers know this and suspend betting at critical moments: before a round starts, during clutch situations, before Roshan is killed in Dota 2. If you try to catch a favorable moment, remember: the bookmaker sees the game faster than you do, or uses algorithms to protect against arbitrage.

The live line is good for those who follow the match in real time, understand game dynamics, and can assess the situation before the odds change. If you're watching with a delay and aren't confident in data speed, it's safer to bet before the game starts.

Bet calculation example

Say you bet 20 euros on team A to win a BO3 match at 1.75 odds. Team A wins the series 2:1. Your payout is 20 × 1.75 = 35 euros. Net profit is 35 − 20 = 15 euros.

Now an example with a handicap. You bet 30 euros on team B with a +1.5 map handicap in BO3, odds 2.10. The match ends 2:1 in favor of team A. Team B lost, but the margin is one map; the +1.5 handicap covers this result. The bet wins: 30 × 2.10 = 63 euros, profit 33 euros.

If team B had lost 2:0, the +1.5 handicap would not have hit, and the bet would be lost.

Common beginner mistakes

Betting on your favorite team without analysis is the most common mistake. Emotion distorts judgment: you overestimate the chances of the team you root for and ignore weaknesses. Betting requires a cold eye, even when your favorite roster is involved.

Ignoring series format. Betting on a favorite in BO1 is riskier than in BO3, even if the odds seem attractive. In a short series, chance plays a bigger role.

Not knowing rosters. A team without a key player is not the team you were counting on. Always check the roster before the match.

Live betting without understanding the game. If you don't know what an eco round means in Counter-Strike 2 or why one team picked up Aegis in Dota 2, live betting turns into a lottery. Watching the broadcast isn't enough — you need to understand what's happening.

Chasing losses. You lose a bet — and immediately stake more on the next match to recover. This leads to impulsive decisions and bigger losses. Stick to your budget and don't exceed it.

Legality of esports betting in Latvia

Latvian law permits interactive gambling, including sports and esports betting, only for operators with a VID license. The list of licensed organizers is published on the VID website — this is the only official source for verification. Licensed bookmakers must check players against the self-exclusion register, transfer winnings to the same bank account from which the deposit came, and comply with Latvian law. The tax on interactive games is 15 % — paid by the operator, not the player.

Foreign bookmakers operate under licenses from other countries — most often Curaçao, Malta, Gibraltar, or the Isle of Man. These licenses are not recognized by VID: from the perspective of Latvian law, such platforms have no right to offer services to players from Latvia. Playing on a platform not licensed in Latvia is an administrative offense; the fine for an individual is 70 to 350 euros. VID maintains a list of blocked domains, and ISPs are required to restrict access to these addresses. Latvian law does not protect players on offshore sites: complaining to VID is pointless, the VID self-exclusion register does not apply to them, and banks may decline payments to unlicensed operators.

Responsible gambling

Esports betting is available only to persons over 18. Before you start, set a budget — an amount you can afford to spend without harm to everyday expenses. Don't gamble on credit, don't take out loans for betting, and don't try to recover losses by raising stakes. If you feel you're losing control, take a break.

Since April 2026, the self-exclusion register is maintained by VID. You can contact VID and ban yourself from gambling for a period of 12 months or longer. All licensed operators must check the register and block access to players on the list. The register only protects against platforms with a Latvian license — offshore bookmakers do not check it. If you need help with gambling addiction, reach out to professionals: Latvia has counseling centers and support hotlines.
