What are live bets and how do they differ from pre-match

Pre-match means betting before an event starts: you choose an outcome, the odds are locked in, and the bookmaker accepts the wager. Live is the opposite: the match is already underway, the score is changing, players are getting carded or scoring goals, and the bookmaker recalculates probabilities in real time. The live line is constantly adjusted: odds on a team that has just conceded a goal go up, while odds on the favorite drop.

The bookmaker pauses bet acceptance at moments when the probability of an event changes sharply: a corner in football, a break point in tennis, a foul in basketball. Until the traders recalculate the odds, the market is closed — the "Place Bet" button is inactive or a "Market suspended" message appears. After a few seconds, the line reopens with new odds and you can bet again.

Why a bet may not be accepted or may be recalculated

You selected an outcome, entered an amount, hit "Place Bet" — and received a "Bet declined" or "Odds changed" message. This is a normal situation in live: while your request was traveling to the bookmaker's server, the odds had time to change or the market closed. The bookmaker will either offer new odds (usually lower) or simply refuse to accept the bet.

Settlement rules differ among bookmakers — read the rules section on the site. Some operators automatically accept the bet at the changed odds if the difference is small (for example, within 5%), others always require confirmation. If you agree to the new odds — you confirm, if not — you cancel and look for another moment.

Broadcast delay and data speed

The stream on the bookmaker's site or on your TV always lags behind real time — usually by 5–30 seconds. The bookmaker receives data from official sports statistics providers faster than the picture reaches your screen. This means that at the moment you see a goal, the bookmaker already knows about it and has had time to close the market or recalculate the odds.

Attempting to bet "ahead" knowing the result from another source won't work: the request will arrive after the event has already been factored into the line. The bookmaker has the right to cancel such a bet if it records that it was placed after the key moment.

Cashout: how to take your money before the event ends

Cashout (early settlement) is the ability to close a bet and receive money before the event is over. You bet 50 EUR on team A to win at odds of 2.00 — potential payout 100 EUR. By the middle of the match, team A is leading 2:0, and the bookmaker offers a cashout of 75 EUR. You can take that money right now or wait for the final whistle and receive the full 100 EUR if team A holds on to win.

The cashout amount is always less than the potential payout, because the bookmaker factors in its margin and the current probability of the outcome. If the situation in the match changes — the opponent scores a goal or increases pressure — the cashout amount drops or disappears entirely. Cashout is not available on all bets: parlays, systems and some markets may be excluded. Settlement rules differ among bookmakers — check the rules section.

Cashout is a risk management tool, not a way to guaranteed earn more. If you are confident in your prediction and the team is controlling the game, it makes sense to wait until the end. If you have doubts — you can lock in part of the profit and reduce the risk of losing the entire bet.

Which sports are especially popular for live betting

Football is the main discipline for live betting: matches last 90 minutes, the score changes gradually, dozens of markets — next goal, total over/under, cards, corners, half result. Bookmakers offer hundreds of live events daily: from top European leagues to regional divisions.

Tennis is second in popularity: every rally affects the odds, a match is divided into games and sets, and you can bet on the outcome of a game, set or the entire match. Basketball — high scoring, the score changes every few seconds, the live line is recalculated constantly. Hockey, volleyball, table tennis — also frequent fixtures in the live section.

Esports is gaining popularity: matches in Dota 2, CS2, League of Legends go by rounds, and bookmakers accept bets on the round winner, maps or the entire match.

Common mistakes in live betting

Impulsive bets are the main trap: a team conceded a goal, the odds on its win went up, and it seems like a good opportunity. But high odds reflect the actual situation: the team is losing, and the probability of its win has dropped. Betting "on emotion" without analyzing the situation more often leads to losing money.

Chasing losses — trying to win back after a loss by doubling or tripling the bet on the next event. In live this is especially dangerous: events follow one after another, there's little time for analysis, and a losing streak can drain your bankroll in half an hour.

Betting without context: you see that a team is leading 1:0, but you don't know that its star player received a red card or the goalkeeper is injured. Odds factor in everything happening on the field — if something seems "too generous," there's almost always a reason.

Legality of betting in Latvia

In Latvia, bookmakers and other gambling operators are legal only with a VID license. The list of licensed operators is published on the VID website — this is the only official source of verification. Licensed bookmakers must follow Latvian gambling law, verify players against the self-exclusion register, and transfer winnings to the bank account from which the deposit was made. Gambling advertising in Latvia is prohibited outside gambling venues.

Bookmakers from international rankings operate under licenses from other countries — most often Curaçao, Malta, Gibraltar. These licenses are not recognized by VID: from the perspective of Latvian law, such operators do not have the right to offer services to players from Latvia. Latvian legislation prohibits participation in gambling that is organized without a VID license and provides for a fine for individuals from 70 to 350 euros. VID maintains a list of blocked domains, providers are required to restrict access to these addresses. Latvian law does not protect players on platforms without a VID license, the VID self-exclusion register does not apply to them, and banks may decline payments to such sites.

Responsible gambling

Sports betting is available only to persons over 18 years old. Live betting requires special attention to control: events move quickly, emotions are stronger than in pre-match, and it's easy to lose track of time and money. Set a budget for the day or week and don't exceed it, even if it seems like "this one will definitely hit." Take breaks: if you've been betting for several hours straight, stop, exit the app, switch to another activity.

Never gamble on credit and don't try to win back using money you need for other purposes. If you feel you are losing control over gambling, use the VID self-exclusion register: the minimum ban period is 12 months, you can set it longer. The register will protect you from access to Latvia-licensed platforms. If you need help with gambling addiction, contact specialists — Latvia has counseling centers and support hotlines.
